Obituary for William John Langdon

William John Langdon
William, a longtime resident of Seal Cove, Fortune Bay, NL, passed peacefully away Sunday, July 3, 2016 at the St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John's, NL. He was the only child of Henrietta and Bertram Langdon, born on Jan 13, 1925.

He worked hard to provide for his family as a fisherman, store manager, and a logger. He retired at the age of 64.

He loved politics. He thoroughly enjoyed attending the Question Periods at both the Newfoundland and Labrador Legislature, and also of late at The House of Commons in Ottawa.

Church life was important to him. He was a soldier (member) of The Salvation Army for more than 60 years. His faith in God and reading the Bible daily brought great comfort to him. He was always interested in the work of The Salvation Army and enjoyed reading its publications.

He enjoyed the visits of family and friends and found a welcome at his home. This past year and a half was very difficult for him dealing with the passing of his dear wife Florrie, of 71 years, his relocating to Ottawa and his second journey with cancer.

Music and singing was important to him. He enjoyed playing the accordion and singing many of the old hymn and choruses of years gone by.

One of his favorite pass times in recent months was writing down the titles of traditional hymns and choruses as they came to his mind.

He started watching hockey in his later years especially when the Toronto Maple Leafs were playing. Going to a Senators game at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa was a highlight for him in the last year where he was treated as a celebrity.

In recent years one of his favorite pastimes was watching TV shows; The Price is Right, Jeopardy, The Wheel of Fortune, Tribal Trails, and his Friday night favorite –A Time to Sing. Also, a means of blessing and inspiration over this past year even to as recent as last Sunday, was watching the Sunday night church service Live Stream from The Salvation Army Conception Bay South Corps.

William is survived by his loving family who will greatly miss him: son, Oliver (Margaret) Paradise, NL, son, William Jr. (Queenie)Seal Cove, Fortune Bay, daughter, Renée (Dan) Toronto; grandchildren, Sylvia (Andrew) Halifax, Verena (George) Grand Falls -Windsor, Shawn (Debbie) Paradise, Sheldon (Krissie), Houston, Texas, Stephen Toronto, Jeremy (Joanna) Toronto; great-grandchildren, David, Claire, Jane, Rachel, Deidre, Dawson, Oliver, and newest Ellie and Emery, plus a large circle of other relatives and friends.

A service of celebration was held for William at The Salvation Army, Seal Cove, Fortune Bay, NL on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at 1:00 pm. Interment followed at the Salvation Army Cemetery, Seal Cove.
